Last week, we took a deep dive into Website Evaluation for prospective clients. We discussed the need for your site to have cohesiveness, legible fonts and colors, and the use of CTA or call-to-action buttons.
Today, we will continue with part two of what to do when evaluating a website. Now we’re getting into the technical stuff, such as broken links or missing pages and load speed.
Misguided URL and the Dreaded 404 Error
A misguided URL occurs when a site has been updated, and the page title needs to be corrected. For example, your page says About Us; however, when clicked, it goes to Contact Us instead. Using the correct URL for your page could be a simple fix.
However, the worst thing that could happen is when a page has a 404 Error. This occurs when the page doesn’t exist or has been moved or renamed. Also, this can occur when the hyperlink to another site or page is broken. This needs to be corrected immediately. Especially when you have a CTA that leads to a goods or services page. The last thing you want is for your visitor to see a 404 Error when purchasing from your site.
Another issue to be aware of is using social media links and how to place them throughout your site. Again, please ensure your visitor has the correct Instagram or LinkedIn account.
Site Speed Needs a Boost
Another issue when evaluating a website is the site’s load speed. Google Site Speed Analyzer is a great tool to determine if your site is lagging when loading on a desktop or mobile device. Your site should be 80 or above. For anything less than that, you need to assess why your site’s speed is slow. Honestly, this can be complicated for those who need help understanding the inner workings of their site, but if you want to do the Speed test, click here.
Website Evaluation, Part 3
To recap, we discussed ensuring your site has cohesiveness, CTAs, and how to correct a misguided URL and 404 Error. In part 3, we’ll cover how your content is vital and how SEO can improve your site traffic.
